Training in the UK
General Information
Recent changes to immigration rules mean priority is given to UK & EEA graduates and as such training opportunities for International Doctors in the UK are limited.
Before applying for a surgical training post you should obtain registration and the appropriate immigration status. We suggest that you investigate these requirements before you travel.
If having considered the above issues you are still considering applying for training in UK you should look at the information on structure of UK training and other sites which provide information on the jobs available such as the MMC website.
Please note that the RCS cannot provide assistance with obtaining appointments to training or non training posts or with arranging clinical attachments and electives
International Sponsorship
The Royal College of Surgeons of England does not run an
International Sponsorship Scheme.
If you wish to come to the UK
for a period of training under sponsorship you will need to explore
opportunities through one of the other bodies approved for sponsorship for
surgery. A list of organisations approved for sponsorship is available from the
General
Medical Council
Since the cessation of the College's sponsorship scheme several postgraduate
institutions have applied directly to the GMC for approval as sponsors. We
would, therefore, advise you to contact the GMC directly on +44 (0)161 923 66
to check whether the current list of sponsors is fully up to date.
If you are successful in obtaining sponsorship you will need to obtain a work
permit for your period of training. The general issues are outlined on work
permits/immigration page but we would strongly recommend
that you obtain advice directly from the Home Office in advance as all
applications are determined on a case by case basis and every case is
different.
