Visiting Specialists

Temporary full registration for visiting overseas doctors can be granted by the General Medical Council (GMC) if they are coming to the UK to ‘provide medical services of a specialist for a short period of time (e.g. to demonstrate a specialist procedure).

The GMC requires visiting overseas doctors to obtain a certificate of introduction from the relevant UK medical Royal College. The certificate, and submission of other evidence, allows doctors who are eminent overseas specialists with exceptional knowledge and skills in a particular branch of medicine to lecture/train/operate in the UK for a short period.

If you require registration for this purpose you should first contact the GMC on 0161 923 6602 for the relevant forms. Once you have obtained these forms you should contact the College providing the following information.

  • full details of the purpose of the visit
  • strong letter of support from the consultant within the UK who is arranging the visit
  • CV
  • copy of Certificate of Good Standing from the surgeons licensing body
  • copy of the relevant GMC form

All requests must be submitted to the College at least 6 weeks prior to the date of the visit.

All information should be sent in the first instance to:
