Consultant Urologist
At school I enjoyed sciences and dealing with people; medicine offered both. After my first surgical “firm” on the wards I knew it would be a surgical career – but which specialty? Unfortunately as a trainee I loved every one! I was fortunate to work for enthusiastic bosses who just inspired me all the way.
In surgery I quickly see the results of my handiwork, the human body’s power of repair and recovery never ceases to amaze me. I was, however, most inspired by my first urology consultant, who I adopted as my mentor. In addition to being a great teacher, he led such an organised and happy team. As a urological consultant I try to follow his example – ensuring my team find me involved, approachable, supportive and available.
My daily work is never “routine”, urology is very broad, involving minor to major surgery; many investigational procedures and non-surgical treatments. Being a woman in a male dominated specialty is an advantage – the ladies choose to see me whilst the men seem to have heard of my skills – or at least of my motor biking and football pursuits! The patients are great – it is satisfying how even the most minor procedure or just taking time for a simple explanation can make an immense difference to someone’s quality of life.

Surgery is a way of life and a very rewarding career, listen to your teachers, listen to your patients, pass on your enthusiasm to your trainees and enjoy the immense satisfaction they all bring.
