Careers afternoons

The College runs surgical careers afternoons for medical students at the College in London twice a year. These sessions are free to attend and all participants are provided with a certificate of attendance for their portfolios.

The afternoon is split into 2 main sections – the plenary session covers:

  • An overview of the training structure
  • Life as a Core and Specialty trainee and
  • ‘A Career in…’ a talk about a specific specialty or branch of surgery

This is followed by a series of interactive and practical sessions including

  • Basic surgical skills such as suturing and knot tying
  • Minimal access workstations in the Wellcome Pathology Museum
  • Interactive careers workshops including details on the application process and CV/ Portfolio building
  • Scrubbing up and gowning

There is also an opportunity to take a tour of the College's Hunterian Museum.
