Breaks in Service

There are many situations you may face that will require you to take a break from clinical practice for a time. Such breaks can result in some of your skills becoming “rusty”, particularly if you had a complete break, and were not undertaking any clinical work to “keep your hand in”.  Therefore, when you return to work, you are likely to need some support while you regain your skills and get used to clinical practice again.

Your local trust or deanery should have a policy for managing this process, and should be able to support you with advice regarding the required training and supervision. You should be able to expect a supported and phased return to work, with appropriate supervision from a peer.

Some Specialty Associations may also be able to provide guidance on how you can gain further experience in a new specialty area. The College does not currently provide guidance on this issue.
