Raising the Profile of Women Surgeons

Raising the profile of women in surgery will serve to highlight the many ways in which women can succeed in the profession and the many benefits they bring to the surgical workforce.

WinS works with a number of related organisations and bodies to highlight the issues affecting women in surgery and to facilitate change in attitudes and practices to ensure that all of the best candidates are able to succeed in surgery.

In addition to this, we work to ensure a positive of female surgeons is portrayed in the media and to as wide an audience as possible.

Women In Medicine

The Department of Health Women in Medicine group was formed following the publication of the 2006 Chief Medical Officer’s report titled “Women in Medicine: Opportunity Blocks”. We have participated in this group, which has sought to identify the issues affecting women in medicine and to consider ways to address these. We will work with relevant organisations to assist the implantation of the groups’ final report.

Research

Research into factors affecting women’s career choices is vital for us to understand where we should be directing our efforts in order to encourage, enable and inspire women to fulfill their surgical ambitions. We have undertaken various research projects, as well and taking account of research completed by others. More details of this can be found in the research section.

Organisations such as the Medical Women’s Federation also work to highlight and address many of the issues affecting women in medicine, and you may find it useful to visit their website.
