Home Women in Surgery Guidance Career choices

Career choices

Women are represented in all nine surgical specialities and at all levels within a surgical career. Paediatric surgery plastic surgery and oral and maxillo-facial surgery currently have the highest proportions of women surgeons, but this may change in the future. There are examples of successful women surgeons in our careers stories section.

Women often have queries about working patterns and the possible work – life balance that a career in surgery offers. As you will see from the women profiled in our career stories section, it is entirely possible to balance both happy work and home lives.

You will find information about flexible working options in our flexible working section. There is also information about working patterns in each section on the various career-stage sections.

If you are interested in developing your career beyond your clinical work, you might like to visit the sections on additional roles and working with us.
